Has Your Doctor Told You to Take Probiotics with your Antibiotics?

I pose this question because over the past year or so when I hear someone is on antibiotics, I'll ask if they're doctor mentioned taking a probiotic with it. I would say about 80% said no, anecdotal, but I had a dentist prescribe me antibiotics and never mentioned a probiotic. So, I thought it would be good to explain this a little more since it seems so common.

Now, why would one want to do this? We get antibiotics it's to neutralize an infection, the antibiotic goes in and wipes out the bacteria, this is great gets rid of the infection and helps return you to health. The problem is that when it wipes out the bacteria, it not only takes out the bacteria responsible for the infection but takes with it the good bacteria that make up our gut microbiome which is responsible for more tasks than we are even aware of honestly. They a huge part of our immune system, they help with digestion, and can even affect your mood and happiness. Probiotics have always been a critical part of the human diet, cultured foods like sauerkraut, yogurt, some cheeses, kefir, and more all contain these beneficial bacteria that help us maintain optimal health. This crucial part of our body has been worn away by overuse of antibiotics in medicine and in our meat, along with pesticides, overuse of antibacterial soap and sanitizer, and a number of other toxins have depleted our microbiome to the point that everyone should probably take a regimen of probiotics. Certainly everyone who has had multiple antibiotic regimens in their lifetime should.

So, you were just prescribed antibiotics, now how do you take the probiotics most effectively with your antibiotics? There are now studies that show you should take them at the same time because the probiotics will help keep the good bacteria up and not taking them until the after the antibiotics could be harmful to let your microbiome deplete that much. Taking the probiotics 2-3 hours before or after the antibiotics will allow them to proliferate, you should continue the probiotics a few weeks longer than the antibiotics. You can buy probiotics at the Health Yourself shop, I will link a couple other brands I think are high quality, I will also link to a brand that makes cultures you can order to make your own probiotic yogurt and kefir.
